2nd Essex Garrision Battalion A Brief History

This Battalion was formed in 1915 at Halton Park as a provisional battalion from drafts of  officers and men unfit for active service on account of age, infirmity or wounds received in action.

As a result, although it served in war time, the Battalion was not used for front line duties, mainly being used for policing and guard duties which then released active Battalions for direct combat duties.

The Battalion was sent to India in 1916 where it was based in the Mhow area until it was disbanded in 1920.

On disbandment many of the officers and NCO's moved to the Army Staff College that had been set up at the army base of Deolali near to Bombay.
