5th Battalion Essex - Battalion Shield 1909
The annual contest took place at Middlewick Ranges, Colchester in September 1909.

B Company - Chelmsford
C Company - Colchester
D Company - Manningtree
G Company - Maldon
The winners were C Company. Their team was Captain Grimwood, Lt Argent, Sgt Hughes, Lance Sgt Cousins, Private Orris, Private Soar, Private Everett and Private Benn.
The Individual best scorer was Sgt Tippins of D Company.
H Company at Clacton were unable to attend but held their own Company contest later that month
The prize winners were Colour Sgt Instructor Aston, Sgt H Norman, Sgt C Cook,Sgt H Land, Private G Larter, Private F Matthams and Private F Hazelton
A & B Companies also held Company contests at Sandon Range.
