9th Essex - Officers at formation in 1914

In August 1914 the 9th Essex Battalion were created.

The initial HQ Staff were

Major Sir John Harrington - Second in Command

Captain C C Spooner - Adjutant

Mr F Richardson - Quartermaster

A Company Commander - Captain A Rome

B Company Commander - Captain A T W Constable

C Company Commander - Captain R F Bury

D Company Commander - Major H Copeman

Regimental Sgt Major - RSM P Boutell 

RSM Boutell had served in the Boer War as the CSM of the Essex Company of the Burma Mounted Infantry and was to prove invaluable in training the raw recruits.

The battalion was based at Risborough Barracks, Shorncliffe.
