15th Essex Rifle Volunteers - Brief History
The 15th Essex Rifle Volunteers were
formed on26 June 1860 when 60 members of the 1st Hornchurch
Volunteers joined the new 15th Essex Rifle Volunteers.
The 15th Essex attended many of the
events organised by the National Rifle Association including:
Guard of Honour at Hyde Park on 7 March
1863 to Princess Alexandra of Denmark on her marriage to the
Prince of Wales
Brighton Review on 2 April 1866 before
Prince of Wales
Grand Review at Windsor on 20 June 1868
before Queen Victoria
Guard of Honour at Epping on 6 May 1882
to Queen Victoria when she opened Epping Forest as free to the
public
Royal Jubilee Review at Aldershot on 9
July 1887 before Queen Victoria.
End of the Battalion
In 1882 the volunteers became part of the
Territorial 5th Battalion Essex Regiment.
They then became H Company of the 1st
Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment and in 1908 after another
reorganisation became part of the 4th Battalion of the Essex
Regiment where many of the men served during World War One.
