Waltham Abbey VAD Hospital

In 1914 when the Great War broke out part of the Town Hall was offered for use as an auxiliary hospital.

The hospital opened in December 1914 and quickly received its first casualties.

The hospital was administered by Essex 16 VAD.

It is reported that the unit initially had 40 beds in the main hall room of the Town Hall  but these seem to have been extended as in January 1918 40 casualties from the hospital visited the nearby Imperial Club, Waltham Cross along with casualties from Broxborne VAD Hospital and Edmonton Military Hospital for a social evening.

There is no records of the date of closure although it had been closed by February 1920.
