Captain Robert Grier
Robert
Grier was born in 1793 and enters the army in February 1810,
aged 17, as an ensign in the 44th Regiment of Foot.
Robert immediately served in the
Peninsula War as part of Wellingtons Army and took part in
actions at Cadiz, Torres Vadros, Pursuit of Massena, Burgos,
Pombal, Redhina, Condeixa, Pomte de Murillo, Guarda, Sambugal,
Fuentes d'Onor, Badjados, Salamanca, Madrid and the Retiro.
In the Peninsula War he was wounded in
the right shoulder at the battle of Fuentes d'Onor , Led a
forlorn hope attack on Badajos which was designated as a feigned
attack but in reality became the successful assault.
He then served in Holland where he took
part in the attack on Merxem and the storming of Bergen op zoom.
This was followed by action at the Battle
of Waterloo where he was severely wounded in the ankle at Quatre
Bras.
Captain Grier was awarded the War Medal
with 3 clasps and the Waterloo Medal.
In March 1817 he was placed on half pay
as a Lieutenant and retired to Anchgrea in County Longford where
he became a respected man.
He
died on 19 January 1868 at Chelsea Hospital
