1st, 2nd & 3rd Essex Volunteer Battalions
For logistical purposes the various volunteer units were linked to form three volunteer Battalions after a short period of units moving the format was changed to two Battalions and at one stage was four Battalions.
The 1st Volunteer battalion comprised of
4th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 20th and 23rd Essex Volunteer Rifles
The 2nd Volunteer Battalion comprised of
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 15th, 18th, 19th, 21st and 24th Essex Volunteer Essex Rifles
I Company of 1st Suffolk VB was based at Saffron Walden in Essex
